Costs of autism care could reach $500 billion by 2025 per research estimates

Current costs for caring for patients with autism spectrum disorder is more than double that for patients with stroke or hypertension and equivalent to that spent on care of patients with diabetes according to a news release by “study senior author Paul Leigh, a professor of public health sciences and a researcher with the Center for Healthcare Policy and Research at UC Davis.” By 2025 the costs to care for patients with autism are estimated to range from “$276 billion to $1 trillion, with $461 billion being the researchers’ best estimate.” Developing improved methods for diagnosis and care could help reduce the cost. The study was published online July 28, 2015 in theĀ Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.
